Guidelines for Sponsors

“..SERVE ONE ANOTHER IN LOVE.”  Galatians 5:13

WHEN YOU AGREE TO SPONSOR A PILGRIM FOR THE EMMAUS WEEKEND, YOU ACCEPT CERTAIN RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THAT PERSON.  YOU AGREE TO:

  • ATTEND SPONSOR’S HOUR in the Chapel while your Pilgrim goes to “New Friend” on Thursday evening.
  • PRAY FOR YOUR PILGRIM before, during and after the weekend.
  • TELL YOUR PILGRIM about the weekend.  Do not be secretive.  Offer the book, What Is Emmaus? by Stephen Bryant.
  • BEFORE MAILING THE APPLICATION, obtain your pilgrim’s pastor’s signature and answer any questions that may come from the pastor.  Be open and feel free to share your own experience.  Be sure to answer all the questions on the form or it may be sent back to you for completion. Mail the completed application with a check to the Registrar.
  • TELL YOUR PILGRIM what they will need for the weekend.  Be sure to mention comfortable shoes, casual clothing, a jacket, toiletries, bedding and maybe a favorite pillow.  MAKE YOUR PILGRIM AWARE OF THE THINGS THEY SHOULD NOT BRING:  cell phone, pager, radio, clock, camera (Help YOUR PILGRIM avoid the embarrassment of having to be told they cannot take pictures!).
  • HELP YOUR PILGRIM with special problems such as child care, house sitting, car pools, family meals, etc.
  • BRING YOUR PILGRIM to the Walk on Thursday evening.  If possible, take your Pilgrim to dinner beforehand, or at least make sure they eat dinner before they arrive.
  • STAY for Sponsor’s Hour to pray over your Pilgrim’s cross. A Fourth-Day book will be available to purchase for your pilgrim the cost is $5.00.

  • WRITE AGAPE LETTERS.  Collect additional letters from your Pilgrim’s spouse (if applicable), family, friends and relatives and bring them with you on Thursday.  Each letter should be in its own envelope. In upper write hand corner of the envelope write the relationship of the letter writer to your Pilrim.
